Child Safety – Preventing Furniture Tip Overs
My grandson is two. He is so smart, inquisitive and funny. Those are great qualities to have, and like most two year olds he is active and fearless. He is also coming to Maine to spend a week with us and I want to make sure he is safe during his visit.
A friend of our family has had the unfortunate experience of knowing first hand how unsecured furniture can devastate a family. She has been sharing her story in the hopes that it will prevent other children from dying the way her beautiful daughter Meghan did. You can read here story and link to resources at Meghan’s Hope.

To secure bureaus, TV stands, hutches, cabinets and basically anything with a shelf, drawer or door regardless of height, we used Quakehold! 2830 7-Inch Steel Furniture Cables (affiliate link). The installation was easy and only took a few minutes. The hardest part was locating a wall stud. The rest was easy. They are not expensive and worth every penny if they prevent accidents.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission TV tip-overs have been on the rise in recent years, and consumers are being urged to protect children by anchoring TVs, so to secure our flat screen TV we used The Baby Lodge Anti-Tip TV Safety Straps (affiliate link). They took minutes to install. My husband strapped the TV to the entertainment stand and secured the entertainment stand to the wall.
To try and reduce my grandson’s temptation to climb, I went around and removed items from the tops of furniture I thought he might try to reach.
I was surprised at how naive I was on the subject of furniture safety. For more information and more tips on securing furniture please visit Meghan’s Hope. You’ll be glad you did.
Wishing you all a happy and safe summer.

I read that devastating story awhile back and forwarded it to our daughters, but I’ve yet to walk through our own house and check for furniture that could possibly be pulled over. The TV straps are new to me and will be a good investment. I’ve never seen the steel furniture cables either. They’ll make it easy to childproof our house and those of our family members, too. Thanks for sharing these safety tips, and enjoy the week with your adorable grandson!
