One of my goals for 2013 is to update the back hallway. It is literally and figuratively a mudroom, because there is usually mud and grass cuttings decorating the floor. We use this door as our main entrance. It is teeny-tiny and also hosts the washer and dryer.
We haven’t done anything to it in the five years we have owned this house. The walls and trim are painted in what I would call mocha, and it just needs a little face lift. Here is my plan.
1. Paint: Paint trim with Benjamin Moore Regal Select – White Dove – leftover from Guest Bedroom wall.
2. Wallpaper: Painted Tulip Wallpaper by Over and Over @ Anthropologie $128
I’m not a big fan of wallpaper, but I wanted to do one room with a fun updated wallpaper print. Anthropologie had a wallpaper that I thought was fun, but it was too expensive for my budget. I thought about a stencil and then what-do-you-know the wallpaper went on sale – deeply discounted even. I ended up getting the wallpaper for $34.95/roll. This is where I do the happy dance. Patience is a virtue.
3. Light Fixture: Intermediate Schoolhouse Semi-Flush Mount Light @ Barn Light Electric – $150
I will make a DIY version of this light.
4. Accessorize:
Coat Rack: Rustic Cast Iron Deer Antler Coat Rack @ Black Cat Hill Etsy Shop $25
Hook: Horse Bust Hook @ Anthropologie $28
Boot Tray: Rubber Boot Tray @ Ballard Designs $26
Tote Bag: Boat and Tote Bag @ LL Bean $38.95
I like these accessories, because they are on the rustic side and offset the flowery wallpaper.
What do you think? Do you like a little wallpaper too, or am I just crazy?

I love everything you have chosen. I so wish I had a mud room because you need one in NH. And I love, love, love the wall[paper. Can you believe there is no Anthropologie in NH? Probably good as I would be there all the time.

Having done my share of putting up and taking down wallpaper, this one is a beauty! I love it! Hope you shop around for those canvas bags….just picked up one for a Christmas present for $6.99!

I love it all! I still love wallpaper. It makes a space cozy in a way nothing else can replicate. I love all the accessories you’ve chosen, too. My daughter was looking at the same light fixture, and I’ll be sending her the link to your DIY post since she’s already purchased two budget fixtures without the green stripe. She’s got a coat rack made from deer hooves that I think you’d appreciate. Maybe it’s a Minnesota thing to use all parts of the deer you shoot. :@

You should do it; wallpaper can really make a difference is small areas–I think it will look quaint and cozy. Love your idea/project.

Hi Mary -the wallpaper is super cute 🙂 and really just appropriate for the space & how it relates to the rest of your house. Will you also paint the door and trim as well in the white dove or some sort of contrasting colors? Can’t wait to see the finished product!

Nice design board. I like all the elements that you’ve chosen. I really love wallpaper and wish that it would make a big comeback. It looks better and cleaner much longer than paint.
I have a boot tray right inside my living room since that is the main entrance. I keep it filled with rocks and it sure does a beautiful job of keeping boots lined up and tidy looking.
Can’t wait to see your finished room!
