This is a story of how we took a poorly functioning console and upcycled it into a TV stand.
Our old TV stand just wasn’t cutting it. It was too small for our current TV (see below). TV’s are getting so BIG!
We had this console, in an alcove area of our house, hosting a printer and a few miscellaneous items, but we could see the potential in it to be a TV stand. It was the perfect size and height
We decided where we wanted to have a shelf and then my husband worked his magic. He took some measurements.
He added a brace for the shelf to sit on.
Then he screwed in a piece of pine that he cut to size for the shelf.
He drilled holes for wire access in the back.
We did a little vacuuming.
Now we had our TV stand.
It was my turn to do some painting. The first coat was a layer of equal parts of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Aubusson Blue, Antibes Green and Old White.
The second coat was straight Aubusson Blue. You can see the difference on the right side drawer and the back of the shelves.
Next was a coat of clear wax, followed by a sanding to let some of the green color show through, followed by a dark coat of wax. It has a pretty turquoise effect.
Here is a side view.
Another view.
A surprise inside the drawer – a coat of Arles.
I’m ready to watch some Mad Men or Downton Abbey.
Enjoy your week!

What grade sandpaper did you use? And did you sand the whole stand or just the edges? I love it and want to replicate it!
Mary Richmond says
I honestly don’t remember what grade I used. I usually write down. I do know that I either used 220 or 150 for sure. I sanded the piece here and there all over, but with heavier sanding on the edges. I hope this helps you.

It does help-thank you!

I absolutely love the color! I really want to recreate this on a dresser I have in my living room… I hope I can manage it, I’ve never tried anything like this before! One question, did you order the chalk paint online did you find a US source?
Thank you for sharing, this is exactly the type of “tutorial” I was looking for, down to the color! 🙂
Mary says
Christine – I bought the paint in the US. If you go on the Annie Sloan website there is a list of US vendors. There may be one near you. Annie Sloan has a new color called Florence that is a turquoise color, FYI.

Did you sand the piece before you painted it? I have a piece I want to re-do, but it has a gloss on it. Was unsure if the paint would stick as well?? Thanks!
